Description :- This species is native to Indonesia, cultivated in India, England and West Indies. Kankola is woody, climbing, perennial with dioeceous flowers in spike, cultivated to a small extent in India, specially in the Assam and Karnataka state, fruits collected when mature but still unripe and carefully dried. Fruit wrinkled, rounded, 5-7 mm in diameter, light brown to dark brown, about 7 mm long stalk attached, pericarp red to slightly brown, testa fused with pericarp, fruit hard and stony albumen white and oily, odour, aromatic end characteristic, taste, pungent and slightly bitter.

Phytoconstituents :- The Sheetal Chini fruits contain  essential oil, alkaloid , resin and fixed oil. Kankola contain Essential oil. Essential oil containing monoterpenes (sabinene 50%, α-thujene, and carene) and sesquiterpenes (caryophyllene, copaene, Cubebin, α- and β-cubebene, δ-cadinene, germacrene), the oxides 1,4- and 1,8-cineole , cubebic acid and the alcohol cubebol and alkaloid (piperidine),

Ayurvedic Properties :- Rasa : Katu, Tikta, Guna : Laghu, Tiksna, Vipaka : Katu, Virya : Usna, Karma : Dipana, Kaphavatahara, Pacana, Rucya, Vastisodhana, Mukhadaurgandhyahara.

Ayurvedic Applications :- Sula, Aruci, Mutrakrcchra, Mukharoga.

Medicinal Uses :- Sheetal Chini is used in the treatment of cold, cough, bronchitis, respiratory infection, sinusitis, poor  digestion, amoebic dysentery and reproductive system related problems, male and female genitals to intensify sexual pleasure during coitus. It is also used in Dysuria, painful urination, genito-urinary infections, Piles, Coryza, congestion, intestinal gas, gonorrhea, and cancer, Oral problems, bad breath, mouth sore and bad taste.
