Discription :- It grown as an ornamental plant and both annual and perennial types are found in gardens. It is cultivated for the seeds. The plant has an erect rough-hairy stem, reaching typical heights of 3 metres. The tallest sunflower on record achieved 9.17 metres. Sunflower leaves are broad, coarsely toothed, rough and mostly alternate.
Phytoconstituents:- Surajmukhi seeds contain a fatty oil (37–48%), rich in polyunsaturated acids (linoleic acid, oleic acid). The oil also contains tocopherols and phytosterol. Triglycerides: chief fatty acids linoleic acid (35-62%). Oleic acid (25-42%), palmitic acid (4-7%) Steroids: Sterols including campesterol, cholesterol, betasitosterol.

Medicinal Uses :- Surajmukhi seeds are useful in Sores, swellings, snakebites and spider bites, skin diseases, itching, ulcers, leprosy, hysteria, fever, biliousness, asthma, burning sensation, in scorpion sting and snake bite, emmenagogue, lessen inflammation, piles, opthalmia, kidney diseases. Seeds are useful in bronchial laryngeal, pulmonary affections, cough and colds.
