Discription :- Shilajit is a thick, sticky tar-like substance with a colour ranging from white to dark brown, the latter is more common. It is predominantly is found in the Himalayan terrains in India. The range runs between Arunachal Pradesh in the east to the west zone consisting of Kashmir and Tibet mountains, Caucasus mountains, Altai Mountains, and mountains of Gilgit Baltistan Pakistan. Shilajit is a homogeneous brown-black paste-like substance, with a glossy surface, a peculiar smell and bitter taste. Dry shilajit density ranges from 1.1 to 1.8 g/cm3. It has a plastic-like behavior, at a temperature lower than 20°C (68°F) it will solidify and will soften when warmed. It easily dissolves in water without leaving any residue, and it will soften when worked between the fingers.

Phytoconstituents:- It contains at least 85 minerals in ionic form, as well as triterpenes and humic acids. It contains Fulvic Acid, seen as the main bioactive component, Di-benzo-alpha-pyrones and the chromoproteins associated with DBPs. It is also contains 3,8-dihydroxy-dibenzo-α-pyrone and 4′-methoxy-6-carbomethoxybiphenyl.

Ayurvedic Properties :- Rasa : Pungent, bitter, salty, astringent, Virya : Heating, Vipaka : Pungent, Guna : Dry, heavy, Srotas : Urinary, nervous, reproductive.

Ayurvedic Applications :- It is used in Madhumeha, Kapha, Gulma, Kshaya, Rajayakshama, Kushtha , Apasmara, Unmada, Shlipada, Shosa, Gulma, Vishama, Jvara.

Medicinal Uses:- Shilajeet is used for Diabetes, regulating the blood sugar level, improving pancreas function, purifying the blood, improving spleen function, strengthening digestion. It is also used for treatment of genito-urinary diseases, sexual weakness, gonorrhea, diabetes, chronic bronchitis, phthisis, asthma, gallstone, Leprosy, Epilepsy, Mental disorders, renal stone, anuria, jaundice, enlarged spleen and liver, and nervous diseases, improving metabolism, reducing fat, Filariasis, Cachexia, Fever, dissolving tumors, tuberculosis reducing tiredness, counteracting thirst, as a powerful rejuvenator, as a sexual enhancer.
