Description :- It is a native of North East India. Globally the species is distributed in the Indo-Malesian region, Car Nicobar Island and Sri Lanka. Within India its presence is reported from the lower hills of Central to Eastern Himalayas to Assam, Meghalaya as well as Western Ghats of Kerala, Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Pippali is a slender, aromatic, creeping and perennial herb; native of the hotter parts of the country. Drug available in cut pieces, having distinct internodes and swollen nodes with a number of small rootlets and root scars; stout, cylindrical, 0.2-0.6 cm thick, reddish brown to grey; odour, aromatic; taste, pungent.

Phytoconstituents :- Pippali contains Alkaloids and Essential Oils. Essential oil contains- Mono and sesquiterpenes, caryophyllene. Alkaloids contains- Piperine, Piperlongumine, Piperlonguminine, Pipernonaline, Piperundecalidine, Pipercide, Sesamin, B- sitosterol, aristolactams, cepharanone B, Piperlactum A and  piperolactam B and 4-5 dioxoaporphines.

Ayurvedic Properties :- Rasa : Katu, Guna : Laghu, Ruksa, Vipaka : Katu, Virya : Usna, Karma : Dipana, Kaphahara, Pacana, Rucya, Vatahara, Vatanulomana, Vulaprasamana.

Ayurvedic Applications :- Anaha, Gulma, Krmiroga, Udararoga, Vataroga.

Medicinal Uses :- Pippali is used to treat fever, jaundice, back pain, arthritis, rheumatism, fractures, sprains, earache, diarrhoea, piles, cough, hiccough, asthma, Dyspnoea, hoarseness of voice, consumption, flatulence, colic, vomiting, acid gastritis, oedema, diseases of mouth, eye diseases, diseases of semen, diseases of women and intrinsic haemorrhage, improving the uptake of nutrients, minerals and vitamins it diminishes obesity, clears the skin, smooths wrinkles and slows down aging.
